Ventilation repair

A hood is a fan, a filter, a light and a control, connected to a duct that someone else installed. Four of those five are ours to test in an hour. The fifth is where most disappointing hoods actually go wrong, and it is worth looking at before anything gets replaced.

“It runs but it does not pull”

Airflow is the product of the fan and the path. If the fan sounds normal but the kitchen still fills with steam, the path is the suspect. In order of how often we find it:

• Loaded baffle filters. Grease reduces free area steadily and silently. A baffle set that has not been through the dishwasher in six months can be most of the problem on its own.
• The roof or wall cap damper. A backdraft damper that has stiffened with grease, or that has been painted at the exterior, will not open fully against the fan.
• Flexible duct. Flex has several times the resistance of smooth-wall rigid duct for the same diameter, and a run that sags between joists behaves worse still. If a hood has never performed since installation, this is the first place to look.
• Reduced diameter. A blower rated for a given duct size loses a great deal of its output when the run necks down at a transition, which happens more often than anyone would like where a hood was swapped for a larger one without the duct being changed.

The makeup air question in Nocatee houses

Nocatee homes were built from 2007 onward, to a building envelope far tighter than the 1920s bungalows in Riverside and Avondale. Tight is good for cooling bills and bad for exhaust: a powerful hood cannot move air out of a sealed box unless an equal volume can get in.

Residential mechanical code commonly requires a makeup air path once exhaust capacity passes 400 cfm, and professional hoods routinely exceed that. The symptoms of not having one are recognisable: doors that resist opening while the hood is on high, a whistle at a closed window, a hood that performs noticeably better with a window cracked, and — the one that matters — combustion appliances that struggle to draft. If your house shows these, the hood is not broken and replacing the blower will not help. The building needs an air path, and that is a conversation with a mechanical contractor, not a repair.

We will identify it and say so. We would rather tell you the truth about a building problem than sell you a motor that will not change anything.

Blowers, lights and controls

Internal blowers are usually accessible from below once filters and any baffle rail are out. A blower that has changed pitch normally has a bearing going, an unbalanced wheel from accumulated grease, or a loose mounting. The wheel can often be cleaned and rebalanced rather than replaced.

Speed control failures split neatly: if one speed works and the others do not, the switch or the speed board is the suspect and the motor is fine. If nothing works at any speed, we start at the supply. Lights on modern canopies are usually a low-voltage circuit with a driver, so a whole side going dark points at the driver or a connector, not at individual lamps.

Salt air is a genuine corrosion driver on the coastal ZIPs — 32082, 32250, 32233 and 32266 among them. Nocatee’s 32081 is not one of them, so hood fasteners and hardware here corrode at ordinary inland rates, and we do not charge time hunting for corrosion that is not there.
